Crossings: Between Fences

Launched in June, Crossings: Stories of Migration, is a programme of events and film screenings exploring modern-day migration. No question, we now live in the age of migration – be driven by political and military conflicts or climate change – and more people than ever are crossing borders. However, what we often seem to forget it that “these are diverse trajectories; each journey has its own story and each story its own journey, traversing different landscapes and carrying with it its own past”. Using cinematic language Crossings is trying to tell these stories differently to how we are used to it via headlines in the media, and political debated.

One of the outputs is Between Fences, which will be shown at the ICA in three days times, on August 19th at 4pm. For this film, director Avi Mograbi and theatre practitioner Chen Alon met African asylum seekers confined by the state of Israel at the Holot detention centre in the middle of the Negev desert, to examine the status of the refugees in Israel. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with filmmaker Avi Mograbi.

Crossings brings together leading commentators, critics and contributors from across various cultural and political contexts to create a rigorous yet diverse platform for discussion to explore migration from both global and local perspectives. Engaging with ethical and political questions raised by representing these narratives on screen, the season aims to open space for dialogue at a time when this is more urgent than ever.”

Crossings: Stories of Migration is an ICA_led UK-wide film and event programme supported by the BFI using National Lottery funding, in partnership with the Goethe-Institut and the School of Film & Television, Falmouth University.
