Oreet Ashery won the Derek Jarman award 2017. See her 12-part web based series Revisiting Genesis here, examining the modern death industry by mixing fictional dialogues and real life interviews with people with life limiting conditions. Think of online profile clean ups to creating immortal virtual avatars, IT ’emotional wills’, death slideshows delivered directly to smart phones and tables, or personalised songs being played to the dying.
“It is a way of making money, especially from vulnerable people who are dying.” says Oreet Ashery, and continues “The way poor people die. Black people, women, gay people. Dying alone, or not. It is all extremely political.”
