The Place Is Here at the South London Gallery

If you are in South East London, take some time to visit the excellent The Place Is Here exhibition at the South London Gallery in Camberwell, before it closes in only 5 days time.

The Place Is Here, shown across both, London and Middlesborough, presents work from over twenty black artists and collectives working in the 1980s in Britain. Even though the works exhibited are tied to and witness this particular time frame, this exhibition feels as ‘now’ and urgent as ever.

Laura Allsop describes it perfectly. “Although anger and frustration were clearly and keenly felt by the artists, their responses to racism and civil unrest are both sensitive and moving. They also act as a powerful witness to the times.”

Almost from day one when opening THECUBE‘s door, we have had a close relationship with artist and designers – offering our exhibition space to young up-and-coming artists and our members to explore ideas and exhibit their work. We believe that art has such a critical contribution in understanding things which sometimes may not be understood by the printed or spoken world alone. It allows us to question, explore and interpret –  so art can sometimes be transformative and even dangerous at times.
